10 Foods to Avoid When Trying to Lose Weight

  1. Sugary beverages

While you must up your fluid intake when trying to shed the extra kilos, you need to also stay away from sugar laden drinks like Frooti, Maaza, and commercially available Nimboo-paani etc. Also aerated drinks and sodas like Sprite®, Pepsi® are strict no-nos. Drink plenty of water and green tea, both of which are known to have plethora of other health benefits like glowing skin, shiny hair etc..

  1. Processed foods

These include ready-to-eat, frozen foods like fries, burger patties, ready-to-eat parathas, chips, cookies, and Kurkure® like snacks. Stay away from anything that comes in a packet, say the experts.  Always choose fresh produce, fruits and vegetables when trying to keep the calorie intake low.

  1. Some condiments

Many condiments like Ketchups, jams, jelly and bread spreads contain sugars and tons of sodium. Opt instead for honey, brown sugar, jaggery or homemade spreads for your rotis and breads. In sandwiches, you could use low fat peanut butter which has tons of protein and omega 3 essential fatty acids. Always go in for brown bread or whole wheat/grain breads over white bread.

  1. All fried foods

These include samosas, kachoris, papads and other tasty ye fat-laden snacks that are oh-so-tempting.  Also avoid achaars, oil-based chutneys to stay lean.

  1. Alcohol

Alcohol packs on kilos quickly as it causes the body to retain water leading to a puffed up and swollen look. In fact; the effects of excessive alcohol on all organs of the body are, simply put, devastating. Experts say that one can go in for the occasion glass of Red wine, but ask to stay away from all other alcoholic beverages.

  1. White foods

These include sugar (which we have already covered above), Maida or processed flour, and salt. Maida is known to lead to higher cholesterol, blood pressure and even gastrointestinal distress in people allergic to gluten. Replace with products made from whole grains instead.

  1. Red meat

If you are deficient in vitamin B12 and haemoglobin, your doctor might ask you to eat more white meat such as chicken, eggs, fish or liver. If you are non vegetarian, it is best to avoid all kinds of red meats like pork, mutton, beef etc. Opt instead for prawns, salmon, chicken and other lean meat options for protein and vitamin B12.

  1. Mithaais-Indian sweetmeats

Yes, this includes those tempting motichoor laddoos, fat-filled sugary sweetmeats, pastries, and so on. If you feel the urge, go in for fruits or only indulge occasionally.

  1. Fast foods

Tacos, pizzas, burgers are a strict no-no until the wedding, (and even afterward, if possible). These food items are known to cause instant weight gain.  Where possible, go in for cereals, fruit snacks, vegetable/fruit salads and home cooked meals.

10. Baked goodies

Cakes, cookies, baked potato wedges, are all carb laden. They also make you feel lethargic. Go in for corn flakes, Moong daal or Soya snacks, oatmeal, granola bars, whole wheat cream crackers, digestive biscuits etc during tea time.
