1. Practice portion control

Small portions of healthy meals are the best way to lose weight. Instead of eating 3 large meals, focus on 4-6 smaller meals. Also, breakfast should ideally be the most important and heaviest meal of the day. You can snack on nuts and seeds as your mid-morning, pre-lunch snack. Drink plenty of water, decaffeinated/herbal teas and fresh fruit juices without sugar. Lunch can be roti, dal, and vegetables and sprouts. It is also important to limit your intake of roti made with wheat. Instead, choose to eat flatbreads made with jowar/bajra etc. You can also have brown rice. Dinner should ideally be the smallest meal of the day. For evening snack, go for fruits and veggies with low-fat dips. 2. Eat a balanced diet

There is absolutely no need for eliminating any food group from your diet. You should eat a balanced food which includes all food groups. Every food group in the right proportion is necessary for healthy weight loss. These days, a lot is being said about going low carb and eating gluten free. This may be true to an extent especially for diabetics, but it is best that you consult a nutritionist before doing so. In general, the best thing to do is limit carbs, eat moderate proteins and fill up your plate with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.

3. Stay hydrated

One of the major components of a healthy diet is water, as our body is made of nearly 70% water element. Dehydration is often mistaken for hunger which leads to unhealthy food cravings. So drink at least 10 glasses of water everyday. Also drink fresh fruit juices (without sugar) and decaffeinated beverages. Limit your intake of alcohol as it leads to weight gain.

4. Eat more fibre

A diet rich in fiber can give you a feeling of fullness and stop you from over eating. The best sources of fibre are fruits and veggies. They are also rich in antioxidants and water content which can give you a glowing skin.

5. Avoid refined grains

Avoid refined grains and choose whole, unprocessed food that is as close to its natural state as possible. Go for whole wheat, oats, ragi and bran which can give filling of fullness.

6. Include physical activity

Indulge in regular physical activity for at least 45 minutes every day –this is necessary to lose weight. You can also choose activities like Yoga, aerobics, cardio, swimming, weight training etc. These will help you burn calories and are necessary to lose weight.
