I, Aashna Singh, am a wedding planner and stylist, and recently got engaged to my boyfriend of 3 years. Being a wedding planner and stylist, you’d think my proposal was all well chalked out and pre-planned by me, however that is not the case. My proposal was probably one of the best proposals ever and it was all planned by my boyfriend Sheekhar.
Singapore
One random day he showed up at my door step with his bags packed and jumping with excitement, and said, “Pack your bags, we have a flight in 4 hours”. He told me nothing further than this other than – “The fun has just begun”. I packed my bags and left for the airport with him. Destination – unknown. Only when I got my boarding pass, is when I found out, he was taking me to Singapore. This is when I knew he was going to ask me to marry him, as Singapore was the city where it all started for us.
In Singapore, he put us up in Hotel Vagabond, an art hotel and told me he got me here to be inspired for my work, as I had been complaining that I felt uninspired. On our first day there, he took me to Newton’s food market and Super Loco for lunch, and we spent the day at Tanjong Beach in Sentosa Island. Here he kept hinting at a proposal and building my anticipation, however no proposal came my way.
At night, he took me to Ce La Vie on the top of Marina Bay Sands, which is where we had met 2 years ago whilst visiting friends. Once there, the entire night we partied hard and had time of our lives; but no proposal yet. Believe it or not, we were on a flight back to Mumbai, without a ring in my finger and I couldn’t help but think, what is this guy up to?

Cut to Thursday later that week, whilst I was at a friend’s house for dinner, the doorbell rang and there he was again, with his bags packed, “Come on we have to go! Pack your bags!”, yet again I had no clue about the destination, 4 hours later we were on a flight to Colombo!
In Colombo, he put us up in a 6-room villa built on a tea plantation, with people from all over the world, who came with the most interesting stories. The first day was spent getting to know them over food and drinks, and the rest of the day we went on to explore the city of Colombo and drove out to Galle.
On our excavation, we bumped into Sam and Ekta (wedding photographers), having worked with them on a few weddings in Mumbai, I went over to speak to them and they spontaneously decided to do a photoshoot for us, which I guess was the Universe’s Way of telling me that there was something special planned. I was half expecting a proposal any moment, however after a lovely day out in Sri Lanka, we went back to our hotel and still no proposal.
On day 2, he told me we were going snorkeling and by this point I had given up hopes of a proposal, passing this trip as another random vacation. However, this is where it all changed.
Finally!
We were taken into the middle of the ocean on a bumpy boat ride, and we jumped right into the water and as we came back up for some air, he asked me, “Will you marry me?”, pulled me underwater and put a ring on my finger, and that was it! I couldn’t stop crying and screaming out of excitement! After we got out of the water, he took me to a place called Mama’s for lunch and got us a bottle of champagne.
The next morning, he set up a cute breakfast table by the pool, for just the two of us and a few hours later, with a big ring on my finger, we were off to another adventure, one that will last us a lifetime, and one I cannot wait for to begin!
