Rajasthani

Rajasthani style mehendi is the most commonly applied style in India. This basically has squiggles of flowers, mesh, paisley designs and leaves as its highlight. Another feature of this style is the inclusion peacock and in cases of bridal designs, the baraat , bride, groom and doli are created on the bride’s hands. This type of style is very complex and its application takes a lot of time as well. In the past though, Rajasthani style was just a simple circle tattooed on hands with the finger tips coloured at the back and front.

Arabic

This style is influenced by the Middle Eastern culture and is fairly less complicated than traditional Rajasthani style. This style too has leaves, vines and flowers as the base design but with lesser detailing. Arabic mehendi is characterized by a lighter shade design tattooed by henna green paste on hands with a darker outline made with vegetable dye or black dye. The Arabic designs are loosely spaced and dry faster too as compared to Rajasthani styles.

African

African mehendi styles are more like Indianized versions of geometrical tattoos.  Though they are generally not applied at wedding functions they are still seen on hands of women who wish to experiment with the new mehendi styles. African mehendi style is very simple and similar to Arabic style. It consists of geometrical designs and patterns. Most commonly applied are lines, dots, meshes and squares.
