It was a pleasure catching up with Maheka who took time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions:

1) Of all the top models and Bollywood stars you have dressed, who do you think looks the best as far as Indian ethnic wear is concerned?
As I design a lot of ethic ensembles, all the stars who I have chosen as showstoppers to don my creations suit the Indian look. They all look great – be it Sridevi or Manisha from the previous lot or Sonakshi or Parineeti from the contemporaries – I feel each one of them has done justice to my designs.

2) What is the best part about your job?
Being a creative person, my job gives me the liberty to use various canvasses to express my creativity, jewellery being the latest canvas which I am launching in the next fortnight. The diversity in expressing creativity I feel is the best part of my job.
3) You seek inspiration from….Inspiration could come from anything, the hues of a flowering bud, the shades of an ocean, architectural designs….anything. I draw a lot of my inspiration from my travels, as I travel extensively. I am just back from a Caribbean cruise.maheka 3 fall winter 2012 Khwaab collection
4) If you had one word to describe your ethnic or bridal collections, which would you use?My creations are for the well travelled woman of today. They are elegant and classic yet dramatic. So I would say my creations are timeless.shervani for brides light green voluminous lehenga with gold blue border white green anarkali5) What are the trends in bridal wear for 2013? Which colors and fabrics never go out of style?

Trends in Bridal wear for 2013 are shararas, voluminous floor length kurtas, voluminous lehangas and  saris which are timeless.

I have done an entire collection with Swiss lace this time. From Swiss chantilly to Swiss cotton laces in all versions – It’s a must have this season. Brocade plus gota work is opulent and gold adds to the bridal feel. Swarovski work and resham is my favourite and something I always work on.  French silks, french chiffons and chantilly laces are also all time favourites and it will never run out of style. Hot pink, burnt orange, black and white, are classics.
6) Can you describe your philosophy about the art of fashion?

Fashion is something you have to believe in. It’s my passion, my persona. Style cannot be cultivated. You either have it or not. Whatever you believe in and are determined towards, you will deliver.

My philosphy towards the art of fashion would be, enjoy the trends as long as they suit your body type and your personality.

Whatever you wear, comfort is of utmost importance. If you are confident, the personality reflects it.

7) Does your work reflect your personal tastes?
Very much. I believe that only if I can do justice to the clothes I create, will I be able to create beautiful ensembles for my clients.
8)What are your future designing plans?
To see my label amongst the best on a global platform.
I have been designing clothes for well over a decade now…. It is my passion and now I am launching my jewellery collection next month. I would like to express my creativity through various mediums.
