The launch of what is tipped to be India’s leading wedding website attracted several Bollywood celebrities including actress Sandeep Dhar, actor Sudesh Berimany and costume designer Sabiha Ali Khan, as well as many of the wedding industry’s top professionals. weddingsonline India is already one of the largest directory of wedding industry suppliers in the Indian market. The company will also publish a print magazine in India.

The rise of the ‘connected consumer’ in India

Internet statistics in India are a promising trend. There are 61.5 million Facebook users in India and overall internet usage was at 120+ million in 2012, a 28% growth on the previous year. Online advertising spend in India increased from $200 million to $1 billion over the last two years which puts an advertising sales based online company in a particularly strong position.

weddingsonline opened their Mumbai office in December 2012 with close assistance from Enterprise Ireland both in India and Ireland. weddingsonline project manager Mr. John Kenny re-located to India to take up the helm as MD.

”The launch of weddingsonline in India is an excellent example of an innovative Irish company with proven pedigree adapting it’s model for the vast Indian wedding market in a country where online services are expanding rapidly,” said Pat O’Riordan director of Enterprise Ireland, India. “weddingsonline has a carefully thought out business model, management commitment and a local presence in India – which are the key ingredients for success in this fast emerging market. To put the scale of the opportunity in context India has some 120 million internet users with this number on the cusp of major growth through the increased penetration of smartphones.”

This is the second major international expansion for weddingsonline.ie, known as ‘Ireland’s Wedding Community’, after the company acquired a stake in UK weddings e-commerce business confetti.co.uk in May 2011.

weddingsonline.ie has been at the forefront of the weddings industry since it was established in 2000,” says Peter Bryans, MD weddingsonline, “and we are continually offering new, more attractive and convenient ways for couples to plan one of the most important days of their lives, and for suppliers to market their services to those couples” Mr Bryans notes the company’s long success domestically as being one of the main reasons for Indian wedding suppliers to choose to use the site. “We are well placed for the expansion into the Indian market. We have always offered a competitive and innovative service to our clients, and we will do the same with weddingsonline India.”

Weddings in India are typically very lavish affairs, lasting from two to seven days with the average guest list consisting of anywhere from 500 to up to 10,000 people. A ‘muharat’ (auspicious day in Hindi culture) took place in November last year when it was reported in the Times of India that there were 30,000 weddings in one day in Mumbai!
