Start by addressing problems

Do you have dandruff, grey hair or hair-fall issues? If yes, do consult a dermatologist/physician who can advise you in these matters and help address underlying problems.

Follow a good diet

Most Indian women are undernourished. Vegetarian brides often tend to lack in vitamin B12 and omega 3 fatty acids in their diet. According to experts , some food items that are great for hair include fish (mainly Salmon), walnuts, eggs, spinach, and lentils etc. Zinc is also a vital element for preventing hair loss and premature greying. Peanuts, dried watermelon seeds, roast beef and oysters etc are some foods rich in Zinc. Likewise, vitamins C and E are also essential for new hair growth. Cashews, whole milk, beans etc are rich in Copper which helps prevent hair fall.

Avoid heat treatments

Avoid using excessive heat through dryers, curlers and straightening tools. If needed, use a heat protecting serum prior to such usage. Always towel dry your hair after shampooing.

Go for oil therapy

Grandma is right! Oiling your hair preferably once a week (overnight) using coconut hair oil or sesame oil etc is indeed a proven method of getting thick, black and shiny hair.

Avoid Stress

Weddings can be stressful. So do opt for some physical activity such as walking, jogging etc to get your mind off things. Also try to calm your thoughts by repeating some religious/non-religious words or through meditation and yoga.

Use natural colouring products

If you have a few greys, opt for natural colouring techniques such as herbal henna etc. Avoid harsh colours or bleaches as they can damage hair and also lead to allergic reactions. If you are planning on using hair colours, do undergo a patch test at least 24 hours before colouring.

Castor Oil Massage

Warm up some castor oil and add a few drops of almond oil. Use this blend to massage your hair and scalp, few times each week. After regular shampooing, preferably using a natural, sulphate-free shampoo, rinse your hair with fresh drinking water to which you have added a few drops of honey.

Make your own conditioner

1 or 2 Eggs + few drops of Honey +2 tsp Olive oil. Apply the mixture to scalp and wash off with cold water (hot water will cook the egg!) and a mild shampoo. Alternatively use 1 or 2 eggs+ brandy or beer. Beat the mixture well. Apply to scalp and rinse off after an hour.  This will make your hair shiny and also stimulate hair growth.

Some more tips

  • Use a wide toothed comb to detangle your hair.
  • Trim your hair every few months to get rid of split ends. This will stimulate hair growth.
  • Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water to help prevent dandruff and dry scalp.
  • Avoid exposure to sun. Use a scarf or wide brimmed hat when going out.
  • Avoid tying your hair too tightly in buns or with sharp clips and pins.

Bill Cosby has said: Grey hair is God’s Graffiti, but you certainly do not want greys on your wedding day! We hope these tips help address your hair-issues. Make sure you start researching bridal hairstyles a few months in advance so you know which look you want on your D-day.
