Baku witnessed it’s first big fat Indian wedding of Maithili Sagar & Rohit Gupta. The dreamy wedding took over the streets of Baku and the two most prominent hotels there. Baku is still reeling in the glory of this spectacle.

The guest-list comprised of friends & family members flying in from all over the world – primarily from India, Canada, USA& Dubai. The wedding celebration was popularly tagged as #RomaForLife, aptly defining the forever love story of Rohit& Maithili.

About The Wedding Destination – Baku, Azerbaijan

Baku, the capital and commercial hub of Azerbaijan, is a low-lying city with it’s coastline along the Caspian Sea. It is famed for it’s medieval walled old town, which contains the Palace of the Shirvan Shahs, a vast royal complex, and the iconic stone Maiden Tower. Contemporary landmarks at Baku include the Zaha Hadid–designed by Heydar Aliyev Center, and the three pointed skyscrapers covered with LED screens called Flame Towers.

Je Aan Nu – The Punjabi Welcome in Baku

The Jazz Club at the Fairmont, a popular club in Baku was transformed into a colorful Pind which gave all the guests a quintessential vibe of Punjab. The Punjabi style welcome with Dholwalas, Pagdi walas, Truck Bar and quirky Punjabi signage won hearts and this was complemented by an amazing performance by Hari and Sukhmani (family’s favourite duo). The event lasted till 4 am and then moved to the 24 hour lounge for some bubbly.

A Mehendi Mehfil

While the day Mehendi set a sufi Mehfil, it was also an integration with the Azeri Henna ceremony. The Mehfil was a unique one not just for Azerbaijan but also for the wedding guests. The Mehendi Bazaar in themes of pink had beautiful gifts for the guests. From Potlis, to peacock feather fans, variety of bangles to traditional Juttis for all the ladies, The Bazaar was the real attraction. Local Azeri artists put Henna for the guests in their traditional attire. While the bazaar got some attention, so did the Mehfil set by the Pakistani Sufi Artists Shafqat Ali Khan and his entourage. The guests enjoyed this laid back event with Sheeshas and Cigars.

Baraat and Wedding

It was really an Indian Take over! It started with the Indian flag proudly flying outside the Flame Towers gearing all the Baaratis to take over the Philharmonic Park (the real centre of Baku) which was the start point of the procession. The spirited Baaratis were joined by even more lively Azeri dancers and Drummers that got into an exhilarating Jugalbandi with the Indian Dhol. It was a true spectacle, which made this wedding the most talked about event in Baku (yes narrowly beat the annual F1 race).

The procession moved into the beautifully decorated Four Seasons Hotel, which was a class apart. The dreamy white and beige alter and a theatrical western wedding feel was integrated with the Indian mandap. For the emotional guests there were tissues for happy tears, for the more gleeful ones, flower filled cones on every chair and for the inquisitive there was a beautiful explanation of the wedding program. The exciting affair went into a royal vintage goodbye.Staying away from the traditional dolis, the vintage car had the couple’s hashtag designed in beautiful flowers. Because regular is boring!

A Night in Baku – The Reception

Taking every event one notch higher in experience, A Night in Baku was a Azeri cultural immersion. Over 2000 kilos of real fruits were used in the decoration for the Azer garden themed event. There were trees erected in the venue with real branches and fresh fruits. The venue smelled of a beautiful orchard. The pre-function areas showcased Azeri traditional Artists, from caligraphers to carpet weavers, and the stage events showcased the thrilling Azeri performances. The pilav dance (yes literally with a plate of Pulao!) to the real fire dancing spectacle, we had it all. The guests were at the edge of their seats. The first sit down dinner ever that was so thrilling. Not to mention the hilarious speeches by the family. The crowd kept the music going till the wee hours again for the fourth night in a row.
