Let’s face it: bridal parties tend to spend a lot more time and consideration in shopping for the Dulhan’s outfit, but not so much for the Dulhe-Raja-to be. And this is obvious given the fact that there are literally thousands and thousands of styles, colours and designs available in Indian bridal attire for the ladies and going through it all does require some more time, planning and patience. But if that is the only reason why you have not been paying attention to your would-be groom’s outfit, then you could not be more mistaken. How hard can it be to find an ideal wedding suit for the to-be groom, right? Wrong! It actually can be quite hard. So, no matter what the style of your wedding is, make sure you DO NOT let your man walk down the aisle in a tired looking sherwani or a blazer that he normally wears to work.
Here are some considerations to make in order to ensure that your groom to be is dapper in his wedding attire:
- Pay attention to the fit
It is best to get the suit or sherwani customized to size. If you are able to grab even finger-full of fabric around the waist of the chosen attire, be it a suit or a sherwani, then it is too loose. If on the other hand, the fabric is getting stretched across the chest then it is too tight.

- It’s as much on the inside as on the outside
When selecting a wedding dress for the groom, make sure you get a feel of how the material and stitching is on the inside of the attire. Some Indian traditional clothing could scratch and abrade making it rather uncomfortable to be worn for longer periods of time. In case of suits, make sure there is a canvassing on the inside to hold the shape better.
- Tips for the reception suit
Grooms-to-be: please do go in for midnight blue coloured suits rather than black as they provide a richer elegance. If you are having a winter wedding, go in for fabrics like wool or cashmere. For summer weddings, opt for breathable blends in wool and cotton or breezy linen. A watch, some elegant cufflinks and traditional/formal shoes will complete your James Bond look.
4. Play it safe
If you have a wheatish complexion, it is best to play it safe. Opt for all-gold heavy brocade work and add a pop of colour using red, yellow or black in the detailing. For a glamorous look; ditch the turban and opt for a pagree instead.
5. The layered look is a definite winner
The ramps this year have been all about the layered look for the grooms. For a traditional wedding ceremony, you could opt for a red kurta paired with an ivory jacket. Vermilion red with beige is a hot combo this year and will probably never go out of vogue.
