Supplier Spotlight: Meet Your Wedding Photographer Abhay Sawant

By  |

As the first choice of discriminating Mumbaikars for the past 32 years, Abhay Sawant has set and maintained the highest standard in both portrait and event/wedding photography. Meet Abhay Sawant through our candid chat with him:

How did you get into wedding photography? How long have you been in this business?

I have been in this business since the past 32 years. In the beginning, I assisted my uncle in his work. After my 10th standard, I learned everything there is to know about photography as a result of which I have now reached where I am.

How will you describe your photography style?

Rather than controlling every detail of your wedding day, my objective is to create a pictorial story that can capture each and every moment in detail with as little distraction from family and friends as possible. I also like to combine the essential individual and group portraits along with the spontaneous events of the day. Only through this can we ensure keeping that joy and excitement alive for decades to come as you view those images 5, 10 even 30 years down the line.

Can you share 3-4 of your favourite wedding photographs with our readers? Also describe why they are your favourites.

I love these 3 images below. They perfectly capture the unedited emotions of the day.

Which are your favourite spots in and around Mumbai for prewedding shoots?

In Mumbai, I love shooting at Vasai Fort. Outside Mumbai, I like Lavasa because of its European feel. We have done many prewedding/engagement shoots in both these places with amazing results.

Not all couples are comfortable posing before the camera. How do you put them at ease?

I have a set of poses which I show the couple. We always make sure that they are comfortable with those poses. Most couples are willing to experiment these days given the popularity of prewedding/engagement shoots. For the camera shy couples, I just tell them to smile and relax and be as natural as possible.

What is the most challenging photo shoot you have done in your career?  Why was it challenging?

I recently shot a challenging Punjabi wedding. The reason why it was difficult to shoot was I did not know the sequence of events. The rituals also seemed so different; so we had to be everywhere at once. The result was amazing nevertheless!

What is the approximate cost of a wedding photography package?

My packages start from 1 lakh onwards.

Any tips for couples on how to choose their wedding photographer?

No two weddings are the same. Make sure you have a plan in place as to what you expect from your wedding photographer. Interview at least 2-3 professionals and get quotations. However, you must not make your decision on the basis of price alone. Read reviews of the photographers before deciding. Talk to the shortlisted candidates a couple of times (over the phone and in person) before you seal the deal.

Finally, any advice to help couples make their wedding day run smoothly?

I would advice taking out some time from their busy schedules to meet each professional. It is important that you have a vision in place. You get married only once, so you should not compromise on any aspect. Select the best wedding suppliers so you can leave the hassles of planning to them and enjoy the day completely.
