Kumarakom- The famed backwaters of Kerala are also a much loved boating, fishing and tourist spot. One of the best ways to enjoy the serenity of the Vembanad Lake is by spending a night in a house-boat. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a favourite with migratory birds such as the egret, Siberian Stork and the Darter Heron. You’ll also get to see other birds like the woodpecker, cranes and skylarks in plenty. The sight of tall coconut trees swaying in the breeze looks just like a scene from a movie.

Since this place is quite a hit with foreign tourists in particular, visiting the beach at sunrise is a good idea if you would prefer a quieter time of the day to enjoy some sand and surf.
