Rock the new orange-red lips perfectly!

“Orange is the new black” is not just the name of the one of the most happening TV shows around; ORANGE lip color IS the new BLACK. The IT lip color of the season. One of the hottest, most wearable trends that has featured in numerous fashion shows like Rag & Bone, DKNY, Surendri by Yogesh Chaudhary, Manish Gupta, Samant Chauhan and Abdul Halder. It has then gradually filtered down to the red carpet with Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone being the fore runners to sport this trend. This color has been sported in neons, warm flattering corals and rusty almost red oranges. So beautiful, so vibrant, so glorious. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition of power, beauty and femininity and yet it is edgy and fun.

Orange lip colors can be worn with all outfits because they either contrast with or complement an outfit beautifully. The only combination we  wouldn’t recommend is an outfit that is dominated by the same shade of orange as your lippie (that is just downright scary). You can wear this color all year round; it is bright and summery for Spring and Summer, yet it’s vivacity also just brightens any dreary and dull winter day.

Yes, it may seem daunting at first to wear this color; it is quite bold and striking, maybe even more than a red but yet it speaks of fun, flirtiness and in its own gauche way; even innocence. It is a brilliant youthful interpretation of its classic and iconic sister shade; red. Surprisingly enough it is not a very tough color to wear, it can be worn by girls of all skin tones, rich and dusky to peachy fair.

What needs to be kept in mind is that rich burnt oranges suit duskier skin tones (eg Parineeti Chopra on the cover of a recent issue of Vogue India) while soft, orangey almost peachy colors flatter lighter skin tones. One of the best coral’s which is not too bold yet peachy and pretty is L’Oreal Paris Rouge Caresse Lipstick in Dating Coral. Nykaa offers best price on Maybelline Superstay 14hr Lipstick range, its striking red shade is great for a night out or even a Sunday brunch. Bourjois Shine Edition in Rouge Making Of is another bright and cheery shade. If you are looking for more playful shades which can easily transition from day to night then Colorbar Take Me As I’M Lipstick in Mischievous Orange and in Sinful Orange would be your best bet.

Since these are bright colors, you may need to touch them up often to keep it looking fresh and bright. To maximize the staying power of your lip color and to prevent it from bleeding and smearing, it is recommend to first line your lips lightly with a matching lip liner; this forms a sort of boundary to prevent the color from bleeding and also a base to hold on to the color. Apply the lip color, fold a tissue in half and dab your lips by pressing it on the tissue. Reapply the color. (Ok; this is fairly well known) The pro tip is that after you reapply the color, take a single tissue and place it gently on your lips and brush over the tissue with powder brush loaded lightly with translucent powder. This sets the lipstick with a thin film of the powder which is invisible to the naked eye and makes the color stay longer.

To pull the entire look together and not look OTT it’s important to have a neutral, matte face with well-defined brows (remember the eyebrows almost make the face, they are the frame) a light touch of blush and you’re good to go. The best way to wear makeup is to highlight only one feature at a time, in this case we are focusing on the lips; hence the preference for a neutral face. Some people think it’s very intimidating to wear such a bright color but, we think, the most important thing to keep in mind is to just be confident, enjoy, revel in your look and SMILE. Let your beautiful, edgy orange lips speak.
