Brides-to-be often have a common concern: hair fall. Hair fall is widespread in young women today and it can be attributed to several reasons: hormonal imbalance, lifestyle factors, environmental stress, dietary deficiencies and so on. Thankfully, there is help available in the form of Laser hair rejuvenation therapy.
Steps Involved in laser hair rejuvenation therapy
Step 1: Preliminary tests
The doctor might order a blood test to understand the real reason behind the hair fall. Specifically, you might be asked to get your serum Ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and Haemoglobin levels. Additionally, some doctors ask for the DHT test as well. (DHT or Dihydrotestosteroneis the main hormone behind hair fall). You might also undergo a computer hair analysis test which can give an exact count of hair thickness, hair density and number of terminal and vellus hair. These tests give the doctor an exact picture as to the procedures, dietary supplements and the number of laser hair stimulation sessions required.
Step 2: Dietary Supplementation
Based on the results, you may be asked to take dietary supplements including Calcium, multi-vitamin and minerals, Biotin and Vitamin D (the latter comes in form of cholecalciferol power or tablets). You may also be prescribed Amino acids and Iron tablets. Depending upon the extent of hair loss, you will be asked to take these medicines for a period of 3 to 6 months. Protein powders may also be prescribed (to be taken with milk) since protein is very important for hair regrowth. In case of hormonal hair loss, drugs like Finasteride (5mg per day) might be prescribed. These must only be taken under the guidance of a physician. Additionally, brides may be asked to increase their intake of non-vegetarian food including chicken, fish, eggs etc.
Step 3: Laser helmet therapy
Once you start with the hair-specific diet regime, the laser therapy can also begin simultaneously. This is done in-office where the doctor/cosmetologist places the low-wattage laser helmet on your head. You need to wear the helmet for 20 minutes. The number of sessions recommended is 3 per week for a period of 12 weeks/3months based on individual cases. You can get more information on laser helmets for hair rejuvenation here. The device basically stimulates the hair follicles and hair regrowth by using red or infrared light with wave lengths in the range 500 to 1100nm. The hair density has been proven to increase (along with improvement in hair quality and colour) using the laser helmet.
Step 4: Nutritional hair massage with Minoxidil
The fourth step in the laser rejuvenation for hair is nutritional head massage using Minoxidil (brand name Rogaine/Regaine) which is available in 5% or 2% strentgh. It is the only FDA approved topical vasodilator drug that is proven to grow new hair.
Step 5: Mesotherapy/PRP Therapy for Hair growth
After 20 sessions, the doctor might again perform a computer hair analysis test. This can help determine if the treatment is working. If there is little or no improvement, you may be recommended Mesotherapy or PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy for hair which may or may not be part of the total package. Both these are safe therapies with amazing results.
