Tips on Choosing the Perfect Wedding Cake

By  |

There’s something so comforting about tucking into a slice of perfectly made cake.

It can tingle all your senses at once, make you sigh in satisfaction and of course, tempt you to reach out for a second slice! Wedding cakes have come a long way from traditional white butter-cream slabs laden with red roses which used to be a common sight at almost every wedding.

These days, couples want their wedding cake to get noticed, to get appreciated and most importantly; to signify something. So, it’s not surprising to find cakes with miniatures of the bride and groom, a re-creation of a fantasy scene, a cake inspired by a movie theme or a multi-tiered cake with delicate edible sugar flowers either. So, what are the tips that you should keep in mind while choosing your wedding cake?

Find the right baker or bakery

Many brides get busy picking up their wedding trousseau and tend to put the wedding cake at the bottom of the list. But here’s the thing- if you aren’t going to dedicate a little bit of time to find the right baker who will make your dream cake a reality, then you really shouldn’t expect a last minute magnificently- put-together creation either.

Most bakeries, wedding cake specialists and even caterers have their own websites, which makes meeting them in person for an appointment that much easier. Always opt for a baker who has worked on wedding cakes before and who will have a portfolio to show you. It also never hurts to ask friends and family members for their recommendations.

Discuss your needs in person

It is after all your wedding day and you want everything to be perfect! So, make the time to visit your baker in person and avoid finalising a cake over the phone or by email. You need to be honest about asking for references and for a wedding cake portfolio with pictures as well. Secondly, be honest about your budget. You’d be surprised to learn just how absurdly expensive wedding cakes can be, because yes, your baker will charge you for the many hours he or she puts into baking and decorating your cake.

Thirdly, make sure you ask if the wedding cake can be delivered to the chosen venue or if it needs to be picked up in person- this is something most couples don’t really think about.

Get Creative

If you have an idea as to how you want your wedding cake to look, don’t hesitate to discuss it. Most cake artists will make a basic sketch of the cake based on any inputs you give them at the first meeting itself. If you already have a chosen theme for your wedding such as a beach wedding, why not have a cake that goes with the theme?

Or how about coordinating the cake design with your wedding dress, saree or even jewellery instead?  And no, your cake does not have to be a boring circle shape either- you’ll find that square and oval shapes look just as pretty too. Having difficulty deciding the cake flavour? Well then, go in for a multi-tiered cake because it gives you the freedom to combine two or more flavours together.

Taste the Cake

Many couples find it difficult to voice their actual opinion when they see their wedding cake design or even taste a sample. Well, at the end of the day, you will be paying for it and you both deserve to have a wedding cake that you actually like to see and taste. Which is why asking your baker for a cake tasting session at least a month or two in advance of the wedding day is so important. You not only get to make any tweaks to the final wedding cake design but you also get to give your feedback with regard to the cake flavour.

It’s simple- if you don’t like it, change it! The last thing you would want to stress out about on your special day is whether the guests are enjoying your cake or not.

Picking a wedding cake can be so much fun, but don’t let it be a last minute decision. Good luck in finding the perfect one for your special day!
