Bridal Body Basics: Wedding Dress Dos & Don’ts

By  |

Now that you are in shape for the wedding and have also chosen the style of your wedding dresses, it is essential to consider the following dos and don’ts that will ensure that the wedding attire truly reflects your personal style.

Do: Do consider the season and venue of your wedding. If you are having a traditional ceremony, it is best to go in for traditional wedding dresses although the trends and ramps might tempt you to go the unconventional way. These include wedding saris specific to your region such as Paithanis for Maharashtrian brides or classic red Lehenga cholis for the North Indian ones. If however, you have chosen a beach to get married on, then do not hesitate to go in for strapless yet festive wedding dresses.

Don’t: Do not let the theme and style of your wedding get in the way of selecting a dress upon which your heart is set. What you can do in such a scenario is buy the dress you love and wear it on another occasion such as the Sangeet or the mehendi night (or even the post wedding functions). If you have chosen a strapless or sweetheart neckline choli, cover up using a traditional Shawl or Shela for a more demure and traditional look.

Do: Do consider good shoes for the dress. In fact; the footwear you select is as important as the dress itself. You can always add some fun elements such as flip-flops for a beach wedding or open-toed peep-shoes for the hotter months. For winter weddings, you might even consider knee length shoes underneath the wedding lehenga.

Don’t: Do not be over or under-dressed, especially compared to your guests. Many brides make the mistake of opting for simpler or affordable styles and the effect in photographs is none too glamorous. Also, clearly state the tone and style of your cocktail party and related events, so if it is a black tie or formal event, make sure you dress accordingly.

Do: Do consider the opinion of your elders before shopping. This is very important in Indian weddings. If you wish to defy traditions, let it be known beforehand. This will save you a lot of hassles in the future: clearly set expectations and avoid disappointments.

Don’t: Do not let your jewellery overpower your wedding dress. For example, if your dress has intricate embroidery, opt for smaller pieces and vice a versa.

Do: Do keep an open mind when it comes to shopping for the wedding dress styles as well as the jewellery. If you have fixed ideas, you will be more prone to making mistakes that will translate into wrong choices. These will only cause regrets later.

Don’t:  Do not be frugal when it comes to selecting the right undergarments. Your dress can be enhanced with the right lingerie. Also select the right body shaping products for the perfect silhouette. You will thank yourself for these when viewing your wedding photos later!
